San Jose wakes up at a cloudy 59°F this morning, but inland sunshine is on deck to push temperatures into the low 80s tomorrow. The marine layer is clinging to the shoreline early, keeping coastal spots cool and gray while the South Bay breaks into sunshine by midday. At the same time, higher-than-normal late-night high tides and a long-period southerly swell are teaming up to cause minor coastal flooding and hazardous beach conditions through tomorrow morning. If you live or park near the bayshore, this is not the week to roll the dice on those low-lying spots.
High Tides and Dangerous Surf
Late-night high tides are running roughly 1.2–1.7 feet above normal and have already led to nuisance flooding on low-lying roads, in parks and in parking lots, prompting a Coastal Flood Advisory for parts of the shoreline. According to the National Weather Service, the long-period southerly swell is ramping up the risk of sneaker waves and strong rip currents at Pacific-facing beaches, and a Beach Hazards Statement stays in place through tomorrow morning. Onshore breezes will strengthen this afternoon with gusts around 15–20 mph near the Golden Gate and coastal headlands, turning the surf choppy and especially dangerous for small craft.
Afternoon Inland Heat
Inland neighborhoods are on track for highs near 83°F today, with most areas expected to cool a few degrees later in the week as the ridge weakens. The overall heat risk is anticipated to stay minor for most locations, although isolated pockets of moderate risk may affect people who are sensitive to heat. If you do not have reliable air conditioning, the Santa Clara County Office of Emergency Management lists cooling-center locations and heat-safety guidance for residents.
What To Do
Move vehicles and valuables out of low-lying bayside areas before those late-night high tides roll in, and give Pacific-facing beaches a generous buffer zone — never turn your back on the ocean. Stick to lifeguarded beaches if you plan to swim, steer clear of jetties and rocks, and keep a close eye on children near the water. Expect patchy coastal drizzle and fog early in the morning, so bring layers for the commute and plan most outdoor activity for the warmer inland afternoon.
