A two-alarm house fire ripped through the rear of a South Boston home on Sunday, sending one firefighter to the hospital and forcing eight residents out into the cold. The flames jumped to a neighboring house on 3rd Street, leaving both buildings with heavy damage before crews finally knocked the fire down. An investigation into how it all started is now underway.
According to WCVB, the fire broke out behind 729 3rd Street and quickly escalated to a two-alarm response. One firefighter was injured while battling the blaze and taken to a local hospital. WCVB also reported that the American Red Cross was called in to help residents who suddenly found themselves without a place to stay.
Damage, displacement and aid
Two homes on 3rd Street were left with significant structural damage after the fire pushed through the rear of one building and spread next door. Eight people were displaced as firefighters secured the scene and kept watch for hot spots.
The American Red Cross and city agencies remained on site to provide emergency assistance, including help with temporary housing and basic needs, while inspectors and engineers began assessing whether the buildings are safe to enter again.
Firefighter hospitalized
One firefighter was transported to a local hospital after being hurt on scene, WCVB reported. Officials have not released details about the nature of the injuries or the firefighter’s condition.
Investigation underway
Boston Fire investigators stayed on scene after the flames were out, working to piece together how the blaze started and how it managed to move into the neighboring home. Displaced residents are receiving help with alternate housing and other resources while the damaged properties are evaluated for safety.
