Steel beams swung into place at MUSC Health’s Indian Land site today as the health system marked a topping-out ceremony, the kind of visible milestone that signals a long-planned medical campus is finally getting close to the finish line. The project pairs a three-story, roughly 62,000-square-foot medical pavilion with a 51-bed hospital aimed at keeping specialty care closer to residents of Lancaster County and the wider Charlotte region. MUSC officials say the pavilion is scheduled to open in spring 2027, with the hospital to follow in 2028.

In a statement to the Fort Mill Sun, David J. Cole, M.D., president of the Medical University of South Carolina, said reaching the topping-out milestone "reflects a long-term commitment to improving how and where care is delivered across South Carolina." J. Scott Broome, CEO of MUSC Health’s Catawba division, called the project "an important investment in the health and future of Lancaster County," according to the paper.

What is planned for the campus

The campus, located on Charlotte Highway in Indian Land, will combine outpatient and inpatient services under one roof, according to MUSC Health. Planned specialties include heart and vascular care, neurology, rheumatology, transplant services, urology, orthopedics, women’s health and advanced medical and radiation oncology delivered through the Hollings Cancer Center. Hollings is South Carolina’s only National Cancer Institute-designated program, which the NCI lists as an NCI-designated cancer center, and MUSC says the expansion will extend access to clinical trials and treatments into the region.

Why Indian Land

Indian Land and Lancaster County rank among the fastest-growing corners of the Charlotte region, and that population surge is a key part of MUSC’s pitch for the project. Local reporting notes the county’s population has climbed about 12.7 percent since 2020, a growth curve that tends to bring crowded waiting rooms along with new rooftops.

Other providers are not sitting this one out. Piedmont Medical Center has also announced new Indian Land locations as part of a recent service realignment, underscoring a broader race to add capacity in a rapidly expanding market.

Timeline and jobs

MUSC’s timeline calls for the medical pavilion to open in spring 2027 and the hospital to come online in 2028, with crews now shifting from steel erection into interior finishes and systems work, according to the system. Local reporting has estimated the campus will generate roughly 500 jobs and represents about a $300 million investment in the region, a measure of how quickly the local health care landscape is changing and how much is riding on this one site.

For residents who routinely drive into Mecklenburg County for specialty care, the new MUSC campus is expected to mean shorter trips and more coordinated services closer to home. Officials say construction will continue through next year as MUSC and its partners prepare to staff clinics and bring outpatient services online ahead of the hospital’s final phase.
