A routine school run in south Charlotte turned into a medical emergency Wednesday when a bus operated for Steele Creek Preparatory Academy was involved in a crash on the 9100 block of South Tryon Street, authorities said. MEDIC crews transported one person to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police have not said how many people were on the bus.
As first reported by WCNC, reporter Diamond Carroll and station crews remained at the scene while investigators worked to determine what happened. Emergency responders focused on the injured person, and details about the cause of the crash were not available at the time of WCNC's initial report.
School and the scene
According to Steele Creek Preparatory Academy, the charter school's campus is at 2200 Shopton Road and the school provides bus transportation. The academy's online calendar also lists June 3 as an early-release day for students.
Why this stretch matters
South Tryon and the Steele Creek corridor have been flagged for congestion and safety upgrades. The CRTPO 2026–2035 Transportation Improvement Program shows right-of-way work on S. Tryon (NC 160/49) scheduled to begin in 2026, with construction later in the decade, according to CRTPO. The stretch has seen other serious collisions this spring, including a May 14 crash that shut Westinghouse Boulevard and left two people dead. For more, see the Deadly Westinghouse wreck coverage.
What's next
Authorities said the investigation into what caused the crash is ongoing and have not released the injured person's identity or whether students were aboard the bus. This story will be updated as officials release more information.
