Dallas is waking up to a muggy start today with mostly cloudy skies and early temperatures holding in the upper 70s to low 80s. A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms is hanging out to the north near the Red River this morning, while most of the Metroplex stays dry and heats up fast. By mid to late afternoon, the high is expected to reach around 96°F, with heat-index values pushing up to about 105°F, so it is lining up to be a very hot day.
Morning Storms Near The Red River
Scattered storms are forecast to stay clustered near the Red River through the morning hours, with the main threat for brief heavy rain and gusty winds focused north and northeast of the Metroplex in Fannin and Lamar counties, according to the National Weather Service Fort Worth. Localized flooding is possible where storms slow down or repeatedly pass over the same area, but most of the action is expected to remain north of Dallas. The chance of measurable rain around the region this morning is about 20%, with activity gradually tapering off by midday.
Afternoon Heat And The Rest Of The Week
Once the morning storm threat wraps up, the rest of the day turns mostly sunny and very hot, with a high near 96°F and heat-index readings that could reach around 105°F. Temperatures hold in the upper 90s through Thursday, then edge closer to the triple digits over the weekend, with Saturday and Sunday both forecast near 101°F and Monday potentially reaching about 102°F. South winds will generally run around 5-15 mph, picking up later in the week, with gusts that could reach 30-35 mph on Thursday and Friday. No watches or warnings are currently in effect for the Metroplex.
Where To Cool Off
For anyone who needs a break from the heat, the city and partner organizations are operating cooling centers and the "Beat the Heat" program, and residents can head to community recreation centers, libraries and select community centers for relief, according to the City of Dallas. Be sure to check hours and call ahead for availability before you go.
What To Know For Today
Plan on carrying water, keeping a close eye on children and pets in vehicles, and limiting strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the afternoon. If you are driving north toward the Red River this morning, be ready for brief downpours and reduced visibility, and keep an eye on local updates and forecasts as conditions change.
