Sunday is starting off gray in Philadelphia, with mostly cloudy skies and temperatures hovering near 68°F at Philadelphia International Airport. Those clouds are expected to thin as the day goes on, giving way to a mostly sunny and hot afternoon with a high near 86°F. West winds will increase to around 5–15 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph, so late-day walks and bike rides could feel a bit on the blustery side.
Storms March In Monday, Flooding A Concern
A slow-moving system is set to arrive on Monday, June 22, dragging showers and widespread thunderstorms into the region from the afternoon into the evening. The National Weather Service notes that some of these storms could bring heavy rain and localized flash flooding, especially along and north of the I-95 corridor. The wettest stretch is expected Monday afternoon into Monday night.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
Winds today will blow out of the west at 5–15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph, then swing around to the southeast on Monday as the storm system moves in. Gusts could knock over unsecured yard furniture and make cycling uncomfortable during the evening commute. Drivers should slow down on wet streets and leave extra space for buses and trucks.
Beach And Boating
At local beaches, the rip current risk is low on Sunday but climbs to moderate on Monday as onshore swell and southeasterly winds increase. Small craft conditions are expected to worsen on nearby coastal waters Monday afternoon into Monday night, so mariners are encouraged to check forecasts before heading out. Lifeguards and beach staff may adjust operations depending on how conditions develop.
How To Prepare
If you live on low-lying streets, clear storm drains before the rain moves in and avoid driving through standing water once storms arrive. Sign up for emergency alerts from the City of Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management and keep your phone charged so you can receive updates.
