Cincinnati is waking up to a thick, muggy blanket of clouds today. Early this morning, Lunken Airport was already reporting about 70F with a sticky dew point near 68F. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to fire up around midday and become more widespread through the afternoon. Temperatures should peak near 81F before slipping into the mid-70s later in the day as a line of storms rolls through with gusty winds and brief, heavy downpours.
Afternoon Thunderstorms Likely
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are on the table before 2 p.m., then things ramp up into more steady storms through the afternoon and early evening, with rain chances about as close to a sure thing as it gets. New rainfall totals of a quarter to a half-inch are possible.
According to the National Weather Service office in Wilmington, the strongest storms will mainly target spots north of the Ohio River and could organize into a linear band in the mid to late afternoon. Southwest winds of 312 mph will swing around to the northwest behind the front, with gusts up to about 22 mph possible during and shortly after the storms.
Plan Your Commute And Events
Brief but intense downpours may knock down visibility and cause ponding on low-lying streets, so build in extra time for both the midday and evening commutes. Outdoor plans this afternoon are rolling the dice, be ready to move events inside if the skies open up. Turnout at festivals and neighborhood gatherings could easily take a hit once the rain arrives.
If you do have to drive, skip the “shortcut” through standing water and give emergency crews space to work if conditions start to slide. Earlier this week, we looked at the heat advisory that set the stage for this front.
Early Week Cool Down And Midweek Risk
tomorrow, cooler and more comfortable air moves in, with highs near 75F and mostly sunny skies giving Cincinnati a brief breather. The quiet stretch does not last long, though.
A few showers or storms may pop up Tuesday night, June 16, 2026, ahead of a stronger system set to move through Wednesday into Thursday. That round could bring another shot of gusty winds and heavier rain, with the potential for localized flooding and isolated severe storms. Keep tabs on updated forecasts through Monday and consider signing up for local alerts if you have midweek plans that cannot easily be moved indoors.
