San Jose started today under mostly clear skies and a brisk 52°F, but the day will heat up fast, with sunshine lifting valley temperatures into the upper 70s and around 80°F. Inland neighborhoods will snag the warmest readings while the coast stays cooler, and northwest afternoon breezes will gust into the 20s across the valley. Out at Pacific-facing beaches, conditions turn far less friendly through Wednesday morning, as long-period southerly swell fuels sneaker waves and strong rip currents.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
Northwest winds will run about 1 to 13 mph this afternoon, with gusts up to 22 mph in more exposed spots. In the usual gaps and passes, winds could climb to 40 mph or higher. The breeze will help take the edge off the humidity, but will not stop inland highs from reaching near 80°F Sunday and the low 80s into early next week.
Beach And Marine Hazards
A Beach Hazards Statement covers Pacific-facing beaches through Wednesday morning, with long-period southerly swell driving an elevated risk of sneaker waves and strong rip currents. Stay well back from the surf and steer clear of jetties and piers. Small Craft Advisories and a Gale Warning are in effect for Monterey Bay and the outer coastal waters, so inexperienced boaters are advised to stay in port. According to the National Weather Service, these beach hazards and marine advisories are expected to linger into the workweek.
How To Plan
If you do not have reliable air conditioning, Santa Clara County keeps a list of cooling centers and hot-weather resources you can use during the hottest hours, according to the Santa Clara County OEM. Move cars away from low-lying bayside streets before high tide, swim only at lifeguarded beaches, and keep an eye on those afternoon gusts if you are planning to spend time outside.
