An 18-year-old was left fighting for his life on Wednesday after he fell from a horse-drawn carriage near Central Park, according to the FDNY. Firefighters and EMS crews responded to the scene and rushed the teen to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. Officials have not yet said how or why he fell from the carriage.
The incident was first reported by PIX11, which noted that FDNY and EMS transported the victim to the hospital and that TWU Local 100, the union representing carriage drivers, was not immediately available to comment.
Another Incident Rekindles Long-Running Fight
The fall comes on the heels of a June 9 case in which a carriage horse collapsed and died in Central Park, an episode that has reignited a years-long battle over whether New York should ban or tighten rules on horse-drawn carriages, according to The Washington Post.
Conservancy Says Incidents Are Piling Up
The Central Park Conservancy responded to the horse’s death with a blunt statement, saying there have been at least seven horse-related incidents in the park over the past 13 months. The group urged passage of "Ryder's Law," which would phase out carriage rides entirely, citing growing public-safety concerns. In its count, the Conservancy highlighted a May tip-over that injured a driver as one of the recent serious cases. The list of incidents was detailed in a June 10 release from the Central Park Conservancy.
Union Says Tight Rules, Not Total Ban
The Transport Workers Union, which represents carriage owners and drivers, is backing a different approach. Instead of eliminating the industry, the union supports a proposal to toughen animal-welfare standards while protecting drivers' jobs. Union leaders argue that stronger oversight, including better rest areas for horses and stricter veterinary checks, could address safety and welfare concerns, CBS New York reported.
Officials Probing How Fall Happened
City and emergency officials say the circumstances of Wednesday's fall remain under investigation. PIX11 reported that investigators were on the scene as emergency crews took the teen to a local hospital. Authorities have asked anyone with video or information about what led up to the incident to contact investigators.
What Comes Next In The Carriage Horse Fight
Mayor Zohran Mamdani has said he supports removing horse carriages from Central Park, a stance that could shape how the City Council handles competing bills. According to The Washington Post, lawmakers and advocates are watching for necropsy findings and police reports from the recent horse death to see whether the evidence shifts momentum toward an outright ban, a compromise measure or a push for tougher oversight instead of ending the rides altogether.
