New York Harbor filled with light Wednesday night as 2,977 drones rose into formation and rebuilt the Twin Towers in the sky, each glowing point representing one person killed in the September 11 attacks. The display, titled 2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor, arrived two days ahead of the 25th anniversary of the attacks and stood alongside the city's long-running Tribute in Light beams.
According to ABC7 Los Angeles, the artwork was developed in collaboration with members of the 9/11 community, including family members, survivors and first responders, and the lights assembled into the outline of the Twin Towers at full architectural scale. Among those involved were Terry Strada, widow of Tom Strada and president of 9/11 Families United; Jim Smith, husband of NYPD Officer Moira Smith, who was killed in the attacks; Tim Brown, an FDNY first responder in both 1993 and 2001; and Genevieve Siller, daughter of firefighter Stephen Siller. The project was presented as a free public event centered on reflection and unity, unveiled ahead of Friday's formal anniversary observance.
The physical execution of the show fell to Sky Elements Drone Shows, working alongside event production agency IDEKO and fiscal sponsor New York Foundation for the Arts, as detailed in a release carried by PR Newswire. IDEKO coordinated multi-agency safety and security protocols spanning federal and municipal authorities, a necessity given the density of restricted airspace around Lower Manhattan. Per NDTV, Sky Elements holds 17 Guinness World Records for aerial drone light displays and specializes in multi-thousand-drone synchronized performances, giving organizers the technical scale needed to recreate the towers in full.
Funding Ties Back to Cantor Fitzgerald's Losses
Major funding for the installation came from private donors and the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund, according to NDTV. The charity was established by the financial firm Cantor Fitzgerald, which lost 658 employees when its North Tower offices were struck on September 11, 2001 — more than a quarter of its workforce at the time.
The drone formation was set to recorded music featuring works by Philip Glass, John Adams, and Max Richter.
A New Technology Alongside an Old Tradition
The drone show did not replace the city's traditional Tribute in Light, which continued alongside the new drone display rather than being displaced by it.
In New York City, the 2,977-drone show was staged over the harbor.
A First Responder's Long Road From Ground Zero
One of the project's collaborators, Brenda Berkman, was an FDNY responder and is an artist.
The drone tribute also unfolds against an ongoing public health reality tied to that day. The World Trade Center Health Program addresses health concerns related to 9/11 exposure.
Friday's Ceremony and Wider Commemorations
The drone show precedes the official 25th anniversary commemoration at the National September 11 Memorial plaza on Friday.
Commemorations are also unfolding beyond New York. The Tunnel to Towers Foundation, established in memory of firefighter Stephen Siller, launched a nationwide Steel Across America tour carrying a World Trade Center steel beam this year.
