
A 17-year-old boy was shot in the chest and fatally wounded on Penn Avenue near 7th Street in Downtown Pittsburgh early Sunday, according to city public safety officials. Officers found the teen unconscious on the sidewalk, and medics rushed him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
In a statement from City of Pittsburgh Public Safety, Zone 2 officers were called to Penn Avenue at 7th Street around 12:15 a.m. There, they located the victim on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the chest. The Mobile Crime Unit processed evidence at the scene, and Violent Crime Unit detectives have taken over the investigation.
Local station WPXI reported that medics initially transported the teen in critical condition before he died. The outlet also reported that an individual was detained and taken to police headquarters for questioning. Detectives were reviewing camera footage from nearby businesses as they searched for leads, and no arrests have been announced.
