A 26-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after police say he opened fire on a family SUV in East Oakland last Saturday, hitting a teenage passenger while two adults and four children rode inside. The SUV was headed southbound when the gunfire started, according to law enforcement. Officers arrested a suspect a short distance from the scene, and prosecutors have since filed a stack of felony and misdemeanor counts.
According to The Mercury News, the Alameda County District Attorney's Office has charged the 26-year-old with attempted murder, six counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, child abuse, shooting at an unoccupied vehicle, and two misdemeanor counts of brandishing a firearm. The outlet reports that the shooting took place at about 3:17 PM on the 1200 block of 78th Avenue. Witnesses told police which way the suspect ran, and officers found and arrested him nearby. Prosecutors say the SUV’s occupants included two adults and four children, and a 13-year-old boy who was struck was treated at a hospital and released later that day.
Community context
Shootings that involve kids tend to shake a neighborhood, even in a city where the broader violent crime picture has been improving. Earlier this year, KQED reported that Oakland saw a significant drop in violent crime in 2025. City officials credited a mix of prevention programs and tighter coordination between agencies, even as isolated incidents like Saturday’s shooting continue to surface.
What’s next
The suspect is scheduled to be arraigned today at 9 AM, according to The Mercury News. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office is handling the prosecution. At arraignment, a judge will review the charges, determine pretrial custody, and set bail. Police have not immediately released the suspect’s name as the investigation continues.
