A teenage boy was pulled from Houghton’s Pond in Milton on Saturday evening after a frantic water search by first responders, officials said. He was taken to a Boston-area hospital, and authorities have not released his name or his condition.
According to Boston 25 News, crews rushed to the pond around 7 p.m. after reports that a swimmer "went under the water but never resurfaced." The State Police Dive Team, detectives, troopers from the Milton barracks and the Milton Fire Department all responded. Boston 25 cameras captured an individual being pulled from the water, and the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office later said the victim was a teenage male who was transported to a Boston-area hospital.
Where It Happened And Who Responded
Houghton’s Pond is tucked inside the Department of Conservation & Recreation-managed Blue Hills Reservation, a go-to summer hangout for swimmers and hikers. Ahead of the warm-weather season, the Healey-Driscoll administration and DCR rolled out water-safety guidance for inland beaches and ponds, including Houghton’s Pond, as outlined by Mass.gov.
Recent Inland-Water Incidents
This latest rescue adds to a troubling run of inland-water emergencies in the region this spring. In May, a middle-school student was pulled from Field Pond in Andover and airlifted to a Boston hospital, according to NBC10 Boston. Earlier this month, a person was pulled from Ames Pond in Stoughton after an extended search, according to Boston 25 News.
What Officials Recommend
State and park officials continue to hammer home the same basic advice: stay in designated swimming areas, avoid alcohol, always swim with a buddy and follow lifeguards' instructions. Those are the core water-safety precautions they have been emphasizing this spring. The Massachusetts State Police maintain a Milton barracks that covers the Blue Hills area, which is why MSP dive resources were among the responders. Investigators remained at the scene after the rescue, and officials have not released any additional details.
