Downtown Memphis is turning Tom Lee Park into one big backyard party on Saturday, July 4, as the Downtown Memphis Commission rolls out a free, family-friendly Independence Day bash on the riverfront. Expect live music, food trucks, and plenty of activities for all ages before a choreographed drone show kicks off and flows straight into a fireworks finale over the Mississippi River. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., with programming set from 6 p.m. until about 9 p.m.

According to Action News 5, the drone show will directly lead into the fireworks display, and organizers are asking guests to RSVP so they can receive event updates and any last-minute changes.

Security, entrances, and what to bring

The Downtown Memphis Commission says all entry points will have security and weapon screening, with five designated entrances along the riverfront. Approved items include water, clear bags or small purses, lawn chairs, blankets, strollers, and food or non-alcoholic drinks. Backpacks, weapons, tents, large umbrellas, bicycles, and alcohol are on the do-not-bring list. Organizers recommend arriving early and packing light to keep the lines moving at checkpoints.

Road closures and travel

Drivers will want to rethink their usual riverfront route. Action News 5 reports that Riverside Drive and Beale Street will be closed starting Thursday, July 2, at 8 a.m. and will not reopen until July 5. Expect detours around the riverfront and plan to arrive on foot, by bike, where it is permitted, or by transit if possible.

Why organizers are focusing on security

The tightened screening and limited entrances come after a string of spring incidents on the riverfront, including an afternoon shooting in Tom Lee Park that left a woman injured. Tom Lee Park shooting coverage earlier this year noted that the March incident raised broader questions about safety at large outdoor gatherings. Organizers say they are working with the city and riverfront partners on logistics to manage crowds and keep the event firmly in family-friendly territory.

Plan ahead

Admission is free, but the Downtown Memphis Commission is encouraging RSVPs so attendees get the latest traffic advisories, weather updates, and schedule notes. The commission’s event listing links directly to the Eventbrite RSVP page.

Bring lawn chairs or a blanket, get there early to clear security, and leave coolers, pets, and alcohol at home. Before you head downtown, check the DMC site or the Eventbrite listing for any last-minute updates on weather, closures, and crowd guidance.
