A 66-year-old man was struck and killed yesterday on West Grant Line Road in Tracy, in a pre-dawn collision that shut down part of the busy corridor and left investigators piecing together what happened.
According to CBS Sacramento, officers found the man around 5 AM with major injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Driver Stayed And Cooperated, Police Say
In a press release via the Tracy Police Department, officials said the driver involved in the collision remained at the scene and has been cooperative with investigators.
The department said the crash remains under active investigation, and the victim’s name has not yet been released, pending notification of the family.
Officers Flag Sunrise Visibility Risks
CBS Sacramento also reported that police are urging drivers to be especially alert during sunrise and sunset, when shifting light can cut visibility and make it harder to spot people in the roadway. A routine early-morning drive can turn dangerous fast when the sun is in drivers’ eyes.
Older Pedestrians Face Higher Risks Statewide
Pedestrian deaths remain a persistent safety concern across California. Research from UC Berkeley's SafeTREC finds that older adults are hit disproportionately hard in serious pedestrian crashes. The analysis points to pedestrian behavior, right-of-way conflicts, and unsafe speeds as common contributors, a mix that can be especially unforgiving on higher-speed or low-visibility corridors like parts of Grant Line Road.
Grant Line Road Has Seen Recent Crashes
The Grant Line corridor has already seen several serious incidents this spring, including a major traffic closure involving a big rig and a fiery two-vehicle crash in late May. Local outlets, including KCRA and a fiery Grant Line Road smashup report, have tracked those crashes and the resulting closures on the busy route.
Police Seek Witnesses And Video
The Tracy Police Department is asking anyone who may have witnessed Tuesday’s collision or captured it on video to contact the agency’s Traffic Safety Unit, according to the release posted via the Tracy Police Department. Investigators say they plan to release additional details as the investigation moves forward.
