Trinity Metro is giving riders a reason to leave the car at home on July 4, waiving fares on every bus, train and on-demand service running inside Tarrant County. For one day, trips to fireworks shows, festivals and even DFW Airport will be free. The deal covers Trinity Metro buses, TEXRail trips to DFW, TRE trains that stay within Tarrant County, Trinity Metro On-Demand rides, vanpools and the agency’s bike-share system. Some lines will operate on modified holiday schedules, and bus route 46 will add late-night trips for Fort Worth’s Fourth fireworks on Panther Island. Anyone continuing into Dallas County will still need to buy a separate ticket for that leg of the journey.
In a press release from Trinity Metro, the agency framed the fare-free Fourth as part of America’s 250th birthday celebration and urged riders to "skip the parking hassle" by using transit to get to their holiday plans. The agency also pointed out that Cowtown Visitor Shuttles are not included in the promotion and reminded customers to double-check service details before heading out.
What’s included and what’s not
According to CultureMap Fort Worth, the free-ride offer applies to regular bus routes, Trinity Railway Express trips to CentrePort, Trinity Metro TEXRail service to DFW Airport, Trinity Metro On-Demand rideshare services, Trinity Metro Bikes and vanpools. The freebie has a hard border at the county line, though: cross into Dallas County and you will need to purchase a DART ticket to keep going.
How service will run on July 4
Per Trinity Metro, buses and On-Demand paratransit will operate on a Sunday schedule, while TEXRail will use its regular timetable and On-Demand rideshare will follow its standard weekend schedule. TRE and TRE LINK will run on a World Cup non-matchday weekend schedule, the CentrePort circulator will not operate at all, and bus route 46 will get extended late-night service to handle Fort Worth’s Fourth crowds on Panther Island. Customer Care will be open to assist riders, and the ticket sales kiosk at Fort Worth Central Station will operate on shortened holiday hours.
Trinity Metro Bikes and the fine print
CultureMap Fort Worth notes that the bike-share system included in the promotion has roughly 400 bikes at about 62 stations, and riders still need to activate an account, which typically includes a security deposit to cover usage, before unlocking e-bikes. Regular rules remain in effect, so riders should keep an eye on the usual 30-minute ride windows to avoid overage fees and review the program’s terms if they plan to hop on an e-bike during the holiday.
If you’re heading to Dallas, check fares
The free day covers only the portion of your trip that stays inside Tarrant County. Travelers going east beyond CentrePort/DFW Airport Station will need a DART fare for Dallas County service, with pass options and purchase details available from DART. Planning the connection in advance can help avoid an awkward pause at the county line while everyone else is lining up for fireworks.
Trinity Metro advises riders to review schedules and the GoPass app before leaving home and to build in extra time for crowds after the fireworks wrap up. Customer Care will be available for trip planning help, and the agency will keep the Fort Worth Central Station kiosk open on a limited holiday schedule.
