A weeks-long gun trafficking investigation ended at Springfield’s Union Station on Monday, when officers say they pulled three firearms from a backpack on an arriving bus and arrested 32-year-old Ananias Davidson. Investigators report that two of the guns were loaded large-capacity firearms and the third was unloaded, and that the bust capped a probe into alleged interstate gun trafficking.
How detectives say the bust went down
According to WSLS, Springfield’s Firearms Investigation Unit detectives, working with ATF agents, had been tracking Davidson for weeks and met a bus arriving from North Carolina at Union Station. A Massachusetts State Police K-9 named Roxy is credited with alerting officers to a backpack on the bus. When investigators searched the bag, they say they found two loaded large-capacity firearms and an unloaded weapon before taking Davidson into custody.
Charges and booking room blowup
Springfield police say Davidson, who lives in Lynchburg, Va., is staring down a stack of state charges that includes three counts of carrying a firearm without a license, two counts of carrying a loaded large-capacity firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card, improper storage counts and three counts of convicted-felon possession of a firearm, according to WDBJ. The department also says the arrest did not end quietly: Davidson allegedly damaged property during booking, breaking a doorknob and kicking a bench at police headquarters.
Who was involved in the operation
In a detailed update on Facebook, the Springfield Police Department credited several agencies with helping pull the case together, including the ATF, Massachusetts State Police VFAS, the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department and the department’s Firearms Investigation Unit. The K-9 team was singled out for locating the luggage. Officers say Davidson stayed close to the backpack while other passengers grabbed their belongings, which made the lone unclaimed bag stand out even more.
Union Station safety already under the microscope
The timing of the arrest lands in the middle of an ongoing debate over safety and loitering at Union Station. Mayor Domenic Sarno has recently pushed for tweaks to the fare-free bus program and officials have increased patrols at the transit hub, according to Western Mass News. Riders and transit officials told reporters the terminal has turned into a gathering point for large groups, and the city is looking at ID requirements and youth-program options as possible fixes.
What comes next in the case
Authorities say Davidson also had three outstanding non-extraditable warrants from California, Virginia and North Carolina, and that they are continuing to coordinate with federal partners. WSLS reports the gun trafficking probe is still active. So far, no federal charges have been announced, and prosecutors have not released any additional information about upcoming court dates or hearings.
