A vacant two-story Craftsman at 1532 W Cambria St in Westlake lit up Friday afternoon, sending heavy flames out of the second floor and putting a nearby five-story apartment building in the crosshairs. Multiple Los Angeles Fire Department companies swarmed the block, knocking down the blaze before it could jump buildings. Officials said there were no reported injuries.
What the department reported
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the fire was logged as Structure Fire INC#1006 at 2:34 p.m. Crews arrived to find heavy fire showing on the second floor of the vacant Craftsman, with clear exposure risks to an adjacent five-story apartment building and another two-story Craftsman next door.
The department’s alert lists units from Fire Station 11, along with multiple battalion, engine, truck and rescue companies. Firefighters were “proceeding offensively” and requested additional resources as they worked the incident, the alert states. The initial update confirmed that no injuries had been reported, and the department also posted an on-scene update on X that included a map and incident details.
Neighborhood pattern
Westlake has been no stranger to recent fire calls in smaller residential structures, a trend local outlets have been tracking. A June 11 carport blaze near MacArthur Park was covered by local outlet Hoodline, and MyNewsLA previously reported on a February apartment fire tied to disassembled lithium-ion batteries. Together, the incidents highlight how older walk-up housing can still draw multi-company responses even when everyone walks away unhurt.
What residents should know
Officials urged people to steer clear of the block while crews were working and to follow any evacuation or safety instructions from first responders. Anyone with information about immediate hazards or who witnessed the fire is asked to call 911. LAFD posts incident alerts and status updates on its alerts page and social channels as scenes are resolved.
We will update this story if the department releases further details about damage, inspections or occupancy impacts.
