What started as a run-of-the-mill shoplifting stop on San Antonio's Northwest Side turned into a tense confrontation Thursday, and now police want help tracking down the man they say is responsible. Investigators report that a man took a pair of sunglasses at a store in the 1600 block of Vance Jackson Road, removed the price tag and tried to walk out without paying. When a store employee flagged him, an off-duty Eagle Pass ISD police officer attempted a citizen's arrest, and the suspect allegedly pulled a knife, pointed it at the officer, then bolted east through the parking lot. The officer drew his service weapon, but the suspect got away and remains at large.
What police say
According to News 4 San Antonio, the incident took place Thursday and is listed under case number 26124198. Police say the man grabbed the sunglasses, stripped off the tag and, when confronted, pulled a knife and threatened the off-duty officer while store staff tried to step in.
How to help
Detectives are asking anyone who knows anything about the case to call Crime Stoppers at 210-224-STOP (210-224-7867) and to reference the robbery unit when they do. The city's Robbery Task Force page lists that number as the hotline for anonymous tips and outlines how to share surveillance video and other potential evidence with investigators.
Retail thefts turning violent
The confrontation adds to a string of spring incidents in San Antonio where simple shoplifting calls have escalated into assaults or displays of weapons, a trend that has rattled retail workers and kept detectives busy. In May, a North Side clerk beaten in grab-and-go case drew similar concern, and police continue to tell businesses to preserve any video evidence and to avoid physically detaining suspected thieves themselves.
Legal note
Investigators are treating Thursday's case as aggravated robbery because a weapon was displayed. Under Texas law, aggravated robbery applies when a deadly weapon is used or when serious bodily injury results, and it is charged as a first-degree felony. The details of the offense are spelled out in Texas Penal Code §29.03.
