A rush-hour drive on Warm Springs Road turned tragic Wednesday evening when a two-vehicle collision in southwest Las Vegas left a passenger dead and a 73-year-old driver facing a felony DUI charge, police said.
The crash happened about 5:13 p.m. near Montessouri Street. According to Las Vegas police, a 2020 Toyota Sienna traveling east on Warm Springs Road crossed into the westbound lanes, then veered back into the eastbound side and collided with a 2021 Tesla Model Y.
A 33-year-old woman riding in the Sienna was rushed to University Medical Center with serious injuries. She later died at the hospital. The driver of the Sienna, identified as 73-year-old Calvin Hayashi, stayed at the scene and was taken into custody.
Both drivers remained on site after the impact. Investigators said Hayashi “allegedly showed signs of impairment” before he was booked into the Clark County Detention Center, according to KSNV. Court records show he faces a felony charge of DUI resulting in death and a misdemeanor count of failing to drive on the correct side of the street, with an initial court appearance set for Thursday afternoon.
Investigation and charges
Hayashi remains in custody while prosecutors and crash investigators work through the case. The charges are being handled in Eighth Judicial District Court, and Las Vegas police say the investigation is still active.
Detectives will continue reviewing evidence from the scene, including vehicle positions and roadway markings, as they try to piece together the moments before the Sienna crossed into oncoming lanes and then back again into the path of the Tesla.
What the charges mean
Under Nevada law, NRS 484C.430 covers DUI cases that result in death or substantial bodily harm, giving prosecutors the option to pursue felony counts that can carry significant prison time and serious driver’s license consequences. How this case is ultimately charged and sentenced will hinge on the specific facts, any prior history and decisions by prosecutors and the court.
Police said the crash is the 53rd traffic-related death this year in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction. Anyone with additional information about the collision is urged to contact Metro police.
