A 19-year-old Boxford man died after his car struck a tree Thursday night in Topsfield, leaving the vehicle crumpled and neighbors stunned. First responders worked on the driver at the scene before he was taken to the hospital, where he later died at Beverly Hospital. Police have not released the driver's name as investigators continue to probe the collision.
Topsfield police said officers responded around 10:14 p.m. Thursday to reports of a single-vehicle crash in the area of 188 Washington St. When crews arrived, the driver, who was the sole occupant of the car, was trapped and suffering life-threatening injuries. Topsfield firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate him. He was transported to Beverly Hospital and later died, the department said, according to a press release posted by the Topsfield Police Department.
As reported by Boston 25 News, police said a preliminary investigation indicates speed was a contributing factor, and they asked anyone with information to contact the department. The station also described the vehicle as heavily damaged on Washington Street.
Neighbors And First Responders
Topsfield police singled out neighbors and bystanders for acting fast, saying in the release that "their assistance was critical to patient treatment." The department named Capt. Dan Bell and Chief Collins-Brown in thanking those who helped at the scene and praised firefighters and EMS crews for a quick extrication. The department's full release is available on the Topsfield Police Department website.
Speed And Road Safety
State transportation guidance notes that even small increases in speed sharply raise the chance of death or serious injury. Pedestrian fatality risk climbs from about 18% at 20 mph to roughly 77% at 40 mph, a reminder officials say is relevant after any high-speed crash. MassDOT offers materials on speed management and on why slowing vehicles matters for town streets.
How To Help
Anyone with information or who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Topsfield Police at 978-887-6533, according to reporting by Boston 25 News. Investigators say the cause of the collision remains under investigation.
