What started as a welfare check in early June ended with two people behind bars in Ware County, after sheriff's detectives reported finding explicit images of a child under 12. A Waycross woman and a Blackshear man remain jailed with no bond, and investigators say they are still working the case and seeking additional warrants and records.
Welfare Check Uncovers Alleged Digital Abuse
Detectives conducting the welfare check say they found explicit images on a cell phone believed to belong to 45-year-old Amy Michelle Crews of Waycross. Crews was on parole and subject to a Fourth Amendment waiver, which allowed investigators to search her phone, according to officials.
The Ware County Sheriff's Office says Crews admitted taking nude photos of the girl and selling the images in an effort to raise money to reinstate her driver's license. Detectives later identified and arrested 42-year-old Joel Christopher Heath of Blackshear on suspicion of receiving those images. Heath faces seven felony counts of sexual exploitation of children, according to a press release cited by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Sheriff's Statement
Ware County Sheriff Carl James called the allegations disturbing and focused his public comments on the child at the center of the case.
"I am saddened and troubled for many reasons, including my thoughts for the child affected by this case," James said. He praised the detectives handling the investigation and urged anyone with information to come forward.
The sheriff's office identified Det. Sgt. Dakota York, Det. Kyle Strickland, Det. Antony Phillips and Det. Capt. Melissa Thrift as leading the probe, the department said in the release via FOX 5 Atlanta.
Charges And Legal Context
Prosecutors allege that Crews produced and distributed the images and that Heath received them. Both alleged roles fall under Georgia's sexual-exploitation statutes, which carry heavy penalties if a jury returns a conviction.
The state's sexual-exploitation law is codified at O.C.G.A. §16-12-100. The statute covers the production, distribution and possession of sexually explicit material involving minors and allows for lengthy prison terms, forfeiture and lifetime sex-offender registration.
Investigation Continuing
Ware County deputies say they have already executed search warrants in the case and are seeking additional records and electronic evidence as the investigation continues. Both defendants remain in custody after a Ware County magistrate denied bond.
The sheriff's office is asking anyone with information related to the case to contact investigators through the department's regular phone lines or its anonymous tip options. The agency lists its main contact numbers, jail information, voice-tip system and online tip links on its website at the Ware County Sheriff's Office.
