A late-night ride through eastern Pasco County ended in tragedy when a motorcyclist was killed and his passenger seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash, and troopers say the driver who left the scene was found back at his Wesley Chapel home and arrested Saturday night. The Florida Highway Patrol says the case is still under active investigation.

Crash at Handcart Road and Old Bridge Road

According to Tampa Bay 28, the collision happened around 11:12 p.m. at the intersection of Handcart Road and Old Bridge Road, when troopers say a northbound Honda CR‑V turned left into the path of a southbound Yamaha motorcycle. The motorcycle’s operator, a 31-year-old Zephyrhills man, and his 32-year-old female passenger were thrown from the bike. The rider later died at a nearby hospital, and the passenger sustained serious injuries.

Troopers say the CR‑V’s driver, identified as 70-year-old Jaykumar Chaturbhai Patel of Wesley Chapel, left the crash scene, went home, and was later taken into custody. He was booked into the Pasco County jail on multiple leaving-the-scene charges.

What the Charges Mean

Under Florida law, hit-and-run crashes involving injury or death are treated as serious felonies. Leaving the scene of a crash that results in death is a first-degree felony with a mandatory minimum four-year prison term, while crashes that cause serious bodily injury or injury are prosecuted as second- and third-degree felonies, respectively. Convictions also come with at least a three-year driver-license revocation and can require restitution and participation in victim-impact programming, according to Florida Statute 316.027.

Road Safety and the Neighborhood

The crash site sits near a stretch of Old Bridge Road that cuts through newer subdivisions and has already been a flashpoint in local traffic debates. In 2023, Pasco County restricted through-truck traffic on part of Old Bridge between Overpass and Handcart to ease neighborhood impacts, according to LakerLutzNews. County planning documents have also flagged the Old Bridge and Handcart corridor for future upgrades as development continues to spread from the I‑75 and Overpass Road interchange.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers say their investigation remains active and that additional details will be released as they become available, according to Tampa Bay 28. Patel is being held at the Pasco County detention center pending formal charges and any court appearance.
