A typically quiet West Charlotte block was jolted Tuesday when an intruder forced their way into a home on Markland Drive and attacked a woman in front of children, police say. Neighbors reported seeing the street suddenly fill with police cars and medics. The woman was left with minor bruises and scratches, declined to go to the hospital, and the case remains under investigation.
What police say
An incident report reviewed by WRAL states that the intruder broke into the Markland Drive home off West Boulevard, struck the woman, then strangled her a second time while children were present. The call was logged on Tuesday. Police have not publicly released the identity of any suspect or announced any arrests.
Neighbors recall heavy response
Residents told reporters the block is usually quiet, which made the sudden surge of emergency vehicles all the more jarring. One neighbor estimated nearly a dozen police cars lined the street as officers swarmed the area. As reported by WCNC, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police and medics quickly descended on the scene and detectives began canvassing for information. People living in the Ponderosa-Wingate area said the sea of flashing lights left them shaken.
Investigation ongoing
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police and MEDIC were on scene and the woman declined treatment, authorities said, noting that her injuries were minor. Detectives are reviewing the incident report and are asking anyone with information, photos or video from the area to contact CMPD. The department has not released details about a suspect or possible charges, according to WRAL.
