A dump truck driver died Thursday after his vehicle rolled over on southbound Interstate 5 just south of Main Street in Woodland, in a violent crash that turned an ordinary drive into a fatal emergency. Crews pulled the driver from the cab and rushed him to a local hospital, where he later died. Investigators remained on scene working to pin down what went wrong.
What officials said
The California Highway Patrol told CBS Sacramento that the dump truck veered onto the right shoulder and then rolled over. According to CHP, the driver’s identity has not yet been released, and it was not immediately known whether alcohol or drugs played any role. Investigators also reported that no other vehicles were involved in the crash, turning this into a deadly solo incident.
CHP incident log
Per the California Highway Patrol incident feed, the wreck is logged as a “1144-Fatality” on southbound I‑5 at East Main Street and was recorded in midday traffic updates. CHP’s Woodland-area units responded and documented the scene as part of the ongoing investigation.
This stretch has seen other deadly crashes
This reach of I‑5 through Yolo County has already seen its share of tragedy this year. In March, a wrong-way crash killed two people and reignited long-running safety concerns on the rural corridor. Hoodline previously covered that wreck in a story headlined Midnight I‑5 Wrong‑Way Horror, a reminder that regular commuters on this stretch are no strangers to grim news.
Investigation ongoing
CHP investigators said they will be examining the dump truck’s condition, physical evidence at the scene and potential driver factors to determine what caused the rollover. Officials noted that more details will be released after the driver’s family is notified. The agency told CBS Sacramento it was not yet known whether impairment played any role in the crash.
Witnesses asked to come forward
Anyone who saw the crash or has dash-cam footage is asked to contact the CHP Woodland-area office. Local reporting lists the Woodland office tip line at 530-702-6250 for witness information, per The Sacramento Bee.
