A wrong-way crash on Route 146 in Millbury early Saturday left one person dead and another injured, according to state police. The head-on collision happened near Exit 17, mangling both vehicles as emergency crews worked the scene. Authorities say the cause is still under investigation.
As reported by NBC Boston, Massachusetts State Police confirmed the crash location off Exit 17 and said details remain limited. Video from the scene showed both cars with what troopers described as "catastrophic damage." Reporter Kaitlin McKinley Becker noted that investigators were on site and that officials plan to release more information as it becomes available.
Statewide Push On Wrong-Way Detection
The Millbury wreck comes as state leaders move to expand wrong-way detection systems after a series of deadly head-on crashes. A Boston 25 investigation found that a MassDOT pilot program picked up 294 wrong-way drivers at 16 sites. Officials are now planning to roll the technology out to hundreds of ramps, hoping it will help stop future collisions before they happen.
What Officials Say
Massachusetts State Police told NBC Boston that the investigation is ongoing, and they have not released any additional information about the victims or what might have caused the crash. Local and state leaders have pointed to driver confusion and impairment as frequent factors in wrong-way incidents, and lawmakers have been pushing for faster installation of detection equipment, as highlighted in a recent Beacon Hill blitz on wrong-way crash tech.
State police say they will share more information when they can, and this story will be updated as officials release new details.
