What started as a 911 hang-up in the small south Georgia city of Baconton ended with one young man dead, another wounded, and state agents called in to figure out how it all went so wrong.
According to WSB-TV, 23-year-old Ronald Hyson of McDonough was killed Wednesday evening, and a 22-year-old man was also shot. Mitchell County 911 received a hang-up call from the area of School Street at about 6:38 p.m. Deputies checked the neighborhood but did not find anyone in obvious distress. Roughly 15 minutes later, two men showed up at a local hospital with gunshot wounds. Hyson was pronounced dead there, and the second victim was listed in stable condition. WSB-TV reports that no arrests have been announced, and anyone with information is asked to contact the GBI’s Thomasville regional office at 478-374-6988.
The Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office requested that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation take over the case, a step smaller agencies often use when they need additional regional resources or specialized forensic work. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation typically states in its public releases that decedents are sent to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy and that completed investigative files are ultimately turned over to the appropriate judicial circuit for review.
Timeline and unanswered questions
Investigators have not said what sparked the gunfire or whether the earlier 911 hang-up is directly tied to the shooting, WSB-TV reports. Authorities have released very few details, and they have not made any suspect description public.
How to help investigators
The GBI is asking anyone with information to use its online tip form or call the statewide tip line at 1-800-597-TIPS. The agency says tips can be submitted confidentially and are routed to the appropriate regional office for follow-up. The online reporting form is available on the Georgia Bureau of Investigation website.
The shooting has rattled a small community where that level of violence is uncommon, and both local deputies and state agents say the investigation remains active. They are urging witnesses or anyone with video or other evidence to come forward so they can piece together what happened in those crucial minutes after the 911 call.
