A shoplifting call over roughly $34 in missing merchandise on Alewife Brook Parkway ended with Cambridge police arresting a 52-year-old Somerville man who they say had a loaded handgun, suspected illegal drugs and an outstanding warrant.
Officers identified the suspect as Abdul Ahmed. Police say he was stopped near the business after staff reported the theft, taken into custody without further incident and remains held in connection with the case.
What police say
According to the Cambridge Police Department, officers were called to a business on Alewife Brook Parkway after an employee reported suspected shoplifting. Police say they stopped Ahmed nearby.
The department’s daily log states that officers found a loaded firearm, suspected fentanyl and suspected crack cocaine on him, along with prescription pills. Store staff reported that the missing merchandise totaled about $34. Police say the arrest was made without further incident.
Photos and police post
Photos released by the department show the recovered handgun and what officers described as packaged narcotics. In a Cambridge Police Department Facebook post, police say the firearm had an obliterated serial number and that officers recovered multiple small plastic baggies containing what they believe to be heroin or fentanyl and crack cocaine.
The post also notes several loose prescription pills and an extraditable warrant out of Rockingham County, New Hampshire. It lists charges including shoplifting by asportation, carrying a firearm and ammunition without a License to Carry, and possession of class A, B and E controlled substances. According to the post, Ahmed has been arraigned in Cambridge District Court and is being held pending a dangerousness hearing.
Legal implications
Cambridge police say Ahmed did not have a License to Carry. Under Massachusetts law, knowingly possessing or carrying a firearm outside a home or place of business without an LTC can trigger mandatory prison time and other restrictions. As laid out in Massachusetts Legislature records for M.G.L. c.269 §10, carrying or possessing a firearm outside the home without the required license is punishable by prison terms that carry an 18-month minimum and strict limitations on suspension or probation.
Because the arrest involves alleged weapons and trafficking-level drug quantities, the defendant faces exposure to multiple state counts if prosecutors decide to move forward with charges.
Where this fits
Similar weapons-and-drugs stops have surfaced around Cambridge this spring. In May, detectives reported finding a loaded handgun and a large quantity of narcotics during an investigative stop in Porter Square. That pattern, from routine street contacts to task force operations, shows officers frequently uncover packaged drugs alongside firearms during enforcement actions around the city. A previous report detailed the Porter Square arrest.
Police say the current investigation remains active and are asking anyone with information to contact the department. According to the department, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office will handle prosecution, and updates will be posted through official police channels.
