Wednesday, July 8, 2026 is starting off thick and muggy in Austin, with mostly clear skies, temperatures near 77°F at Camp Mabry, and dewpoints parked in the mid 70s. The heat will ramp up quickly through late morning, with afternoon highs near 98°F and "feel like" readings in the low 100s in some spots as the humidity hangs on. If you can shift workouts or errands away from mid afternoon, your body will thank you.
Afternoon Heat And The Week Ahead
Sunshine and light south-southwest breezes will help push highs close to 98°F today, with heat index values up to about 104°F. Winds should stay around 0 to 5 mph this afternoon, then pick up to 5 to 10 mph Wednesday night and turn gustier later in the week. Overnight lows will be slow to relax, hovering near 77°F. Rain chances back off today and Thursday, then tick up again Friday into the weekend as Gulf moisture returns, bringing a shot at scattered afternoon storms Saturday and Sunday, according to NWS Austin/San Antonio.
Heat Relief And Safety
For anyone needing a cooldown, City of Austin libraries and recreation centers are open as cooling centers during their normal hours, and ARCH is providing daytime cooling downtown, though you should double check hours and locations before heading out. To ride out the worst of the heat, limit outdoor exertion during the hottest part of the day, drink plenty of water, and check in on older neighbors or anyone without air conditioning.
