What started as a parking lot firework stunt in Beaverton ended with a citation and a scorched patch of grass near a busy intersection on Saturday, according to police. Officers say a 19-year-old lit an illegal firework near SW Beaverton‑Hillsdale Highway and SW Lombard, where it exploded and ignited nearby dry grass. Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue crews knocked the fire down before it spread, and no injuries were reported. Police later identified and contacted the man after he and his friends left the area and called 911.
What Police Say
In a Facebook post, the Beaverton Police Department said the 19-year-old lit and tossed an illegal aerial-style firework in a parking lot. The device exploded just as a vehicle drove past, sending sparks into nearby dry grass. According to the department, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue crews quickly extinguished the blaze before it could spread. Police said the man was cited for possession of illegal fireworks and reckless burning.
Why Officials Are Warning
State and local officials have repeatedly stressed that aerial or explosive fireworks are illegal in many parts of Oregon and can bring fines or civil penalties, according to the Oregon State Fire Marshal. Under state law, reckless burning and arson charges can apply when a fire or explosion recklessly damages property or puts people at risk, provisions that are outlined by the Oregon Legislature. Local fire agencies in the Tualatin Valley have urged residents to skip fireworks during periods of high fire danger and to follow burn bans to help reduce wildfire risk.
How To Report And Next Steps
The Beaverton Police post reminded residents that “people can be held criminally responsible for using illegal fireworks” and urged anyone with information about similar incidents to contact the department. For non-emergencies, residents can call the Beaverton Police non-emergency line at 503-629-0111 or use the agency’s online contact page. City and fire officials say quick reporting gives crews a better chance to stop small fires before they turn into much larger incidents.
