After two decades of feeding Chapel Hill with Shanghai-style comfort and weeknight takeout, Red Lotus has turned off the lights for good. The family-run restaurant announced its permanent closure on June 30, and devoted regulars squeezed in last orders and swapped memories online as the longtime spot served its final meals, leaving a familiar seat empty in the local dining scene.
What The Owners Said
In a farewell posted on its website, Red Lotus told customers, "We are deeply grateful for the love and support from our community for the last twenty years." The message confirmed that the closure is permanent and that June 30 marked the restaurant's final day of business, according to Red Lotus's website.
What’s Next For The Space
Staff members declined to explain why the restaurant was shutting down, keeping quiet as speculation swirled among regulars. But another chapter is already lined up for the address: The News & Observer reports that a different Asian restaurant is expected to take over the space in August under new management. According to the paper, staffers had no comment when contacted, but the handoff will keep an Asian concept in that familiar spot.
A Local Fixture For 20 Years
Owner Kevin Zhu opened Red Lotus in 2006 and gradually folded in Shanghai specialties alongside Asian-American fusion dishes that helped shape the restaurant’s identity, as noted by WRAL. For many Chapel Hill diners, it became a go-to for casual dinners and carryout, the kind of place you ordered from on a Tuesday night without even checking the menu.
After news of the closure broke, customers turned to the restaurant’s Facebook page to share stories, post thanks, and say their goodbyes, a wave of nostalgia that reflected the neighborhood loyalty the owners referenced in their parting note, according to The News & Observer. For now, the official closure notice remains on the Red Lotus website while the space readies for its next tenant and the planned August reopening under new management.
