Best Buy is pulling the plug on thousands of Insignia gas ranges after federal regulators warned that the stoves’ front-mounted knobs can be turned on way too easily, creating a fire hazard. Owners are being told to stop using the affected ovens until a safety fix is in place. The recall targets stainless-steel models with five front knobs that have been on the market for several years.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recall, announced July 9, covers Insignia Front Control Gas Ranges with model numbers NS-RGFGSS1 and NS-RGFCGS2. It involves about 3,820 units in the United States and roughly 700 more sold in Canada. Regulators say the front knobs "can be activated accidentally by humans or pets," which can lead to an unexpected gas flow and possible fire. The agency cites one report of accidental activation and no reported injuries. The ranges were imported by Best Buy Purchasing LLC of Richfield, Minnesota, and sold at Best Buy stores and online between November 2020 and March 2026.
As reported by WPLG Local 10, consumers should immediately stop using the recalled ranges and contact Best Buy to request a free set of compatible knob covers. Best Buy will ship the kit after confirming the buyer’s model number, and the station notes that the retailer will include installation instructions. Until those covers are installed, owners are urged to keep children and pets away from the stove.
How To Check If Your Stove Is Affected
To see if your range is part of the recall, look for the model label inside the bottom drawer of the appliance. The affected Insignia models are NS-RGFGSS1 and NS-RGFCGS2, WSLS reports. If your model number matches, head to Best Buy’s recall portal at recallrtr.com/range, where you will find a registration form and detailed instructions on how to get the free knob covers.
Where This Fits Into A Bigger Problem
The Insignia recall is only the latest chapter in a broader issue with front-control ranges. Good Morning America reported that Samsung recalled more than 1.1 million slide-in electric ranges in 2024 after hundreds of fires and dozens of injuries. In early 2025, ConsumerAffairs covered LG’s roughly 500,000-unit recall tied to a similar hazard. Regulators and appliance makers have been discussing design changes and new safety features aimed at preventing accidental activation of stove controls.
Best Buy’s recall information is posted on the retailer’s product recall page, and customers with questions can use that portal or contact customer service for assistance, Best Buy states. In the meantime, safety experts advise keeping the cooktop clear of flammable items, double-checking that all knobs are in the off position before leaving home, and keeping pets and kids away from the appliance.
If you bought an Insignia range from Best Buy at any point since 2020, check your model number and follow the recall instructions as soon as you can. Local reporting and the federal advisory land on the same bottom line: do not store anything on the cooktop, and always confirm the knobs are off before you leave or go to bed to reduce the risk of accidental ignition. See WSLS or your retailer’s recall page for full details.
