A gunman wearing body armor jumped out of a pickup truck and opened fire on a house on Maury Street in Houston’s Near Northside, punching several holes in the home and sending neighbors diving for cover. The shaken homeowners say it is the second time in two weeks their family has come under fire.
Security cameras on the property recorded the latest burst of gunfire. The footage shows a person in body armor stepping from a pickup and firing repeatedly toward the front and side of the house, according to KHOU. The family told the station they turned over the video in hopes that someone will recognize the shooter. They also pointed to an earlier June 30 attack when, police say, the gunman stayed inside an SUV while shots were fired at the same home.
Neighbors described the barrage as a rapid volley that left little time to react. “Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, like that,” one resident recalled. Another said that during the first shooting, “the gun was so powerful, I hit the floor.” The house now bears multiple bullet punctures across its front and side, and investigators were seen marking shell casings in the yard and landscaping, KHOU reported.
Family Fears They Are Being Targeted
The homeowners say it feels like someone is deliberately coming after them, or that the shooters have confused their house with another address. Either way, the mood on the block has shifted. Neighbors say everyone is on edge after watching the same home get shot up twice in such a short span.
The attack comes in the middle of a tense stretch for north Houston. Just weeks earlier, a June 10 drive-by outside a nearby home left two men wounded, adding to residents’ worries that the area is getting more violent.
Police Dig Into Video, Neighbors Hope For Leads
Houston police are investigating both the latest shooting and the earlier June incident. So far, officers have not announced any arrests or publicly said whether they believe the same person or group is responsible for both attacks.
Detectives and the family are banking on the surveillance footage to break the case open. They hope that someone will recognize the gunman, the vehicle, or anything else in the video and call in a tip that finally gets this shooter off their street.
