Authorities are working to unravel a grim discovery along the Oklahoma River after emergency crews were called out Monday afternoon for what a caller believed was a body in the water near S.W. 15th Street and Walker Avenue in southwest Oklahoma City. The call came in around 2 p.m., and responders located human remains in a hard-to-reach stretch of the river. Investigators are now focused on identifying the person and determining how they died.
What police said
The Oklahoma City Police Department said the remains were found in an area of the river that is particularly tough for crews to access, which complicated the response. Officials have not released the victim’s manner or cause of death, and the scene remains under investigation as the medical examiner reviews the discovery, according to KOKH.
Past recoveries along the river
This is not the first time the Oklahoma River has turned into a recovery site. In February, a body was pulled from the river near Portland Avenue and Southwest 15th Street, as reported by KOCO. Local fire dive teams and the medical examiner have previously been called in for similar scenes, a reminder that stretches of the river can be treacherous and challenging for first responders to reach.
What comes next
Police say they will work with the medical examiner to identify the person and determine whether the death is suspicious, and they are keeping a tight lid on specifics as the inquiry moves forward, per KOKH. Officials have not released any identifying information or a timeline for when more details might be made public.
