A head-on crash on Briceville Highway (State Route 116) in Anderson County left three people dead on July 1, according to a Tennessee Highway Patrol preliminary report released July 9. Troopers say both drivers and a passenger were already dead when first responders got to the scene. Investigators say a northbound vehicle crossed the center line and slammed into a southbound SUV. One vehicle rolled onto its roof and caught fire, and the highway stayed shut down for hours while crews documented the wreckage.
What the THP report says
According to WVLT, the Tennessee Highway Patrol's preliminary report identifies the northbound driver as Rocky Bailey, the passenger in that vehicle as Jack Ramsey, and the southbound driver as Tonya Craig. WVLT reports the wreck happened in the early afternoon and that emergency crews found all three victims dead when they arrived.
Vehicles, fire and preliminary cause
As reported by WATE, the THP's early account says the northbound vehicle crossed the center line into the southbound lane and hit a Nissan Rogue head-on. The northbound car came to rest upside down and was fully engulfed in flames. WATE notes that seat belt use for the two people in the overturned vehicle was listed as unknown in the initial report.
Investigation and road impacts
WVLT reports that THP requested its Critical Incident Response Team to assist with the investigation and that crews kept State Route 116 closed for roughly nine hours while they worked the scene. Officials have released only preliminary information so far as they continue to gather evidence.
Road history and local context
State Route 116 is a narrow, winding mountain road that recently needed emergency repairs after a slide earlier this month, according to local reporting, and residents have long pressed for safety improvements along the route. MyCourierNews reported that crews reopened a washed-out stretch of SR-116 in June after repair work by TDOT.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol classifies the document as a preliminary crash report and says the investigation remains active. Troopers have not announced any criminal charges. Authorities asked that anyone with information contact THP as the inquiry continues, and this story will be updated as official findings are released.
