A teen riding on the back of a moped was killed Tuesday when the scooter crashed along a narrow jetty at Bush Terminal Park in Sunset Park, throwing him off and leaving him with a devastating head injury, authorities said. Medics rushed the boy to the hospital, but doctors could not save him. The teen driving the moped was not hurt, according to police.
Deadly Crash on Bush Terminal Park Jetty
Police told New York Daily News that the moped operator lost control on a jetty near First Avenue and 47th Street, sending the passenger flying from the scooter. The paper identified the victim as Christopher Cabrera and reported that medics took him to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn before he was later pronounced dead at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, police said. Investigators said the operator, a 17-year-old boy, was uninjured, and detectives are working to confirm the passenger's identity and notify his family.
Second Teen Killed in Two Days
The Brooklyn death follows a separate crash in Queens that left a 13-year-old passenger dead after a moped swerved to avoid an opening car door and collided with a truck, as reported by NBC New York. Police in that case said charges were not immediately filed.
Safety and Enforcement
City officials have tightened rules for e-bikes and other micromobility vehicles in recent years, including a 15 mph operating cap in many locations, but enforcement against illegal, high-speed gas mopeds remains uneven. New York City rules set operating limits and equipment standards for electric bikes and scooters as officials debate how best to curb dangerous riding on streets and waterfront paths.
Investigation Ongoing
Police asked anyone with information about the crash near First Avenue and 47th Street to contact the NYPD Major Collision Investigation Unit, detectives told New York Daily News. The investigation remains active as authorities piece together how the moped ended up on the jetty and why the operator lost control.
