A child was grazed by a bullet inside the Rochelle Manor apartment building in Durham’s Joyland neighborhood on Friday, according to police. Officers sealed off the complex and surrounding streets, working the scene into the morning with crime scene tape and evidence markers dotting the pavement.
Durham police responded to a shooting call at the complex, where a child was hit by gunfire, according to WRAL. The station’s breaking-news tracker noted a heavy police presence at Rochelle Manor and reported that it was not yet clear whether any arrests had been made.
Another Strike at a Troubled Corner of East Durham
This latest shooting is part of a pattern of violence near Rochelle Manor. In May, bedroom bullet shocks east Durham coverage detailed a drive-by that left a round lodged in a bedroom at the complex and reported that juveniles were targeted. Residents and local outlets have chronicled a string of shootings across the Joyland and Rochelle Street area this year, turning this pocket of east Durham into a recurring dateline for gunfire.
Investigation Ongoing
As of Friday, Durham police had not released information about a suspect or a possible motive, according to WRAL. Local reporting has tied this case to a broader wave of gun violence in east Durham, and the News & Observer reported in May that dozens of people had been shot in the city so far this year. Detectives continue to investigate the Rochelle Manor shooting.
