A Sunday ride on State Route 94 in Campo turned deadly when a 26-year-old Chula Vista motorcyclist was killed after his bike slid into oncoming traffic and was hit by a pickup, authorities said.
The collision happened about 9:30 AM near Buckman Springs Road as the rider was traveling east, negotiating a curve. According to the California Highway Patrol, his motorcycle crossed the centerline into the westbound lanes, where it slid directly into the path of an oncoming pickup. The rider’s name has not yet been released.
According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, CHP investigators said a Ford F-150 struck both the motorcycle and the rider with its front end. The pickup was driven by a 27-year-old man from Montebello, while the victim was confirmed as a 26-year-old Chula Vista resident. CHP Officer Jamine Lopez told the Union-Tribune that investigators have not found evidence that drugs or alcohol played any role in the crash.
Investigation and road updates
The CHP’s Border Division is investigating the collision and is documenting the case in its public incident logs. The agency posts ongoing incident details and lane-closure information for serious crashes on its California Highway Patrol page as officers process the scene and clear the roadway. So far, officials have not announced any arrests or criminal charges connected to this crash.
Where this crash fits
Motorcyclists account for a notable share of traffic deaths in California, and the California Office of Traffic Safety has documented hundreds of rider fatalities statewide in recent years, underscoring how exposed bikers are when something goes wrong. Rural two-lane highways like SR-94 have also seen other serious wrecks: ABC 10News reported a separate fatal off-road vehicle crash near Engineer Springs earlier this year that briefly shut down parts of the roadway while crews worked the scene. Together, those statewide numbers and local incidents highlight the risks riders face on twisty, largely unprotected roads.
CHP and local news outlets are expected to publish more details as the investigation develops, and the agency’s traffic page remains the official clearinghouse for road-status updates tied to serious crashes. We will update this story if officials release the rider’s identity or share additional findings from the investigation. Our condolences go out to the victim’s family and friends.
