A quiet Bristol Township morning turned chaotic on Friday when a charging e-bike battery exploded inside a home, blasting flames and sparks across the living room and forcing residents to sprint for the exits. The blast, reported at roughly 10:05 a.m., ignited a couch and an ottoman and left the house with significant heat and smoke damage. Neighbors and family members rushed to help get people out, with some residents dropping from a second-floor window to escape. One person suffered minor burns and cuts after dragging the burning e-bike outside and trying to knock down the flames with a garden hose.
Police and fire officials told investigators the battery burst while the e-bike was charging inside the Aspen Lane home, and that the bike had been brought over by a friend of the homeowner's son, according to NBC10. The homeowner said the battery had been replaced just a few days earlier, and authorities report that the cause of the failure is still under investigation.
After the fire was pushed out of the living room, a charred e-bike was seen on the home's porch, captured from above by Chopper 6 footage, according to 6abc/Chopper 6. FOX 29 shared video from the scene and reported that firefighters said the battery repeatedly re-ignited when hit with water, undermining the homeowner’s attempts to extinguish the blaze with a hose.
Why e-bike batteries can be dangerous
Federal data and safety notices show that battery-related incidents involving e-bikes and other micromobility devices have been climbing, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission has been publishing analyses and issuing product warnings while it works on tougher testing standards. According to the CPSC, micromobility devices have been tied to deaths, injuries and property-loss incidents in recent years.
How to reduce the risk
Safety guides recommend charging batteries in a well-ventilated spot, using only the manufacturer’s charger, steering clear of overnight charging and keeping batteries away from combustible materials. Consumer Reports and other outlets advise routinely inspecting packs for damage and calling emergency services immediately if a battery starts to smoke or catches fire.
Officials say no serious injuries were reported and the scene remains under investigation, according to NBC10. Authorities are asking anyone with footage or information about the incident to contact local police as investigators work to determine what triggered the battery failure.
