Philadelphia wakes up cloudy and sticky this morning, with temperatures starting out in the low 70s. Sunshine should muscle through by afternoon and send highs to about 85°F. At the shore, a new Coastal Flood Advisory is up for parts of South Jersey and the Delaware Bay during this evening’s high tides, and beaches are looking at a MODERATE rip current risk. Low-lying shore roads and riverfront streets could deal with spotty tidal flooding tonight. By later in the week, the whole region shifts into full-on July mode with highs climbing into the 90s by midweek.
This Morning And Afternoon
Clouds are expected to start breaking by mid-morning, letting temperatures climb from the low 70s into the mid-80s by late afternoon, with an easterly breeze around 5 mph. Rain chances are basically nil in the city today, so outdoor plans should be safe, but the humidity will definitely be noticeable once you step out of the shade. If you are out during the warmest hours, bring water and sunscreen and plan on taking a few breaks.
Coastal Flooding And Rip Currents
Forecasters have issued Coastal Flood Advisories for South Jersey and much of the Delaware Bay for this evening (Sunday, July 12). Minor tidal flooding is possible on exposed shorelines and low-lying riverfront streets around the evening high tide. A MODERATE rip current risk and 2 to 4 foot breaking waves are also expected at many beaches today. Lifeguards will be flying warning flags and conditions can change quickly. For the latest watches and exact tide times, see the National Weather Service Mount Holly.
Heat Outlook Through The Week
Starting Tuesday, high pressure and a southerly wind pattern will crank temperatures higher, with highs near 91°F. Wednesday looks like the peak, with readings that could push into the upper 90s, which may be enough for heat alerts in some spots. City resources remain available for residents who are most at risk. What To Know
If you are heading to the shore this evening, do not drive through flooded streets and follow whatever flags the lifeguards are flying. If you live on a low riverfront block, it is worth moving your vehicle to higher ground before the evening tide. Check local forecasts and tide times before heading out, and plan ahead for the midweek heat with plenty of water and access to shade or air conditioning. If you need help finding a cooling center, call 311 for locations and details.
