A quiet Sunday drive through Cockeysville turned into a frantic rescue attempt when a passerby saw flames ripping up the back of a home on Padonia Road. He pulled over, grabbed his phone, and sprinted to the front door, recording the fire as he banged and shouted, desperate to alert anyone who might be trapped inside. Neighbors watched as Baltimore County fire crews rolled in and got to work on the growing blaze.
How crews were notified
Baltimore County fire crews were dispatched around 12:44 p.m. Sunday to the 800 block of Padonia Road, where fire officials say the blaze began on the rear deck and had already spread into the second floor by the time units arrived. No residents were inside, and firefighters brought the flames under control just before 1:35 p.m. The roof had been burned through by the time the fire was knocked down, according to CBS Baltimore.
Good Samaritan's account
“I immediately went into, 'is there anybody in the house?'” recalled Zane Levey, the driver who stopped when he saw the fire. Levey, who said he recently joined a junior firefighter program, ran straight to the front door with his phone recording as he tried to wake and warn the family inside, according to FOX45.
Damage and investigation
One firefighter suffered minor burns while battling the blaze and was treated at the scene, officials said. The cause of the fire has not yet been released, and investigators are expected to examine the property as crews board up windows and clear the scene, according to CBS Baltimore.
