A 30-year-old Tampa man is facing a long list of charges after what deputies describe as a violent wreck on Turner Road that sent two drivers to the hospital and shoved a vehicle through a nearby fence, according to WFLA. Investigators say the driver initially took off, but deputies later tracked him to an apartment about a mile from the crash scene.
Arrest, charges and breath-test results
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as Kelly Castleman, 30, of Tampa. He was booked on multiple counts, including two counts of DUI with serious bodily injury, two counts of leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury (vulnerable road user), three counts of DUI with property damage over .15, and one count of leaving the scene of unattended property, according to WFLA.
Deputies said Castleman provided two breath samples that measured 0.287 and 0.283, which is far above Florida’s 0.08 legal limit. He was arrested after deputies say units located him at an apartment roughly a mile away from where the collision happened.
Legal penalties that could apply
Under Florida law, a DUI that causes serious bodily injury is treated as a felony offense, and leaving the scene of a crash when someone is hurt can also bring felony charges and potential prison time. Section 316.193 covers DUI offenses and enhanced penalties for crashes that cause serious bodily injury, according to the Florida Statutes, and Section 316.061 outlines a driver’s duty to stop and render aid after a crash, according to Section 316.061.
Sentences depend on the exact charges and the severity of the injuries, but if prosecutors secure felony convictions, the statutes allow for years behind bars and significant fines. Those sections provide the legal framework for the counts deputies say Castleman is now facing.
How deputies say the crash unfolded
Investigators say Castleman’s vehicle was heading along Turner Road when it rear-ended a sedan, forcing that car into oncoming traffic, where it collided head-on with an SUV. One of the drivers was reported in critical condition and the other with serious injuries, and both were taken to a hospital for treatment, according to WFLA.
The force of the crash sent at least one vehicle through a nearby fence, deputies said. Authorities have not released the names of the injured drivers or updates on their conditions, and they are still piecing together the precise sequence of events.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who witnessed the wreck or who may have video from the area to contact investigators. The case remains under investigation, and all charges are pending formal review by prosecutors.
