Friday night in central Los Angeles turned into a rolling drama after police launched a fast-moving pursuit of a car they say was linked to a robbery. The driver zigzagged through surface streets, briefly shot onto the northbound 110 Freeway, then looped back into downtown before officers finally forced the vehicle to a stop. Bystander video and news chopper footage captured the driver stepping out as if to give up, only to climb back behind the wheel and take off again. Officers ultimately detained at least one person as investigators combed over the scene.
According to CBS Los Angeles, the driver slipped around an LAPD patrol SUV, threaded through traffic and at one point leaned out to grab something from the street before flooring it again. The chase moved onto the northbound 110, then funneled back into downtown, where officers used a PIT maneuver to bring the whole thing to an abrupt end, the station reported.
How LAPD Weighs The Risks Of A Chase
LAPD policy calls for a running “balance test” during pursuits, weighing the urgency of catching a suspect against the danger to everyone else on the road. That includes looking at traffic conditions, the seriousness of the alleged crime and how the chase is unfolding in real time. The LAPD training manual notes that the same test guides decisions about using spike strips, PIT maneuvers and air support overhead.
Traffic Disruptions And Aftermath
Video from the scene shows officers trying to box in the suspect vehicle before finally executing the PIT that spun it out in downtown, as reported by CBS Los Angeles. In the hours after the pursuit ended, officials had not yet released full details on arrests, potential charges or any injuries, and investigators were still working the scene.
What Locals Should Know
For downtown residents, this was not exactly a one-off. The neighborhood has seen several chase-related scares this spring, with local coverage and social media regularly filled with footage from news helicopters and bystanders on the sidewalk. Hoodline recently documented a similar downtown pursuit in April, highlighting how a single car can snarl traffic, trigger a massive police response and grab the attention of half the city.
After incidents like this, officials typically review aerial video and body-camera footage as part of post-pursuit investigations. Locals can expect further updates from the LAPD once that review is complete and more information about Friday night’s chase is cleared for release.
