A quiet Sunday morning on U.S. Highway 90 East in Castroville turned deadly when a Chevrolet Camaro slammed into the back of a family’s GMC Yukon, killing one person and injuring several others, authorities said. The crash happened in the westbound lanes at Tondre Parkway just before 7 a.m., and emergency crews rushed multiple people to nearby hospitals. The Yukon, carrying a family of four, was hit from behind, leaving one passenger dead at the scene and another seriously hurt.
Officers were dispatched at about 6:59 a.m. to a major motor-vehicle crash and arrived within minutes. Investigators determined a black Chevrolet Camaro driven by a lone female rear-ended the GMC Yukon, according to News4SanAntonio.
One Yukon passenger was pronounced dead at the scene; another suffered serious injuries and was taken for medical treatment, while the Camaro's driver was also transported to a local hospital. "The preliminary investigation indicates intoxicants may have been a contributing factor," police said, and toxicology testing is pending, according to News4SanAntonio.
Investigation and possible charges
Castroville police said the names of those involved have not been released while the investigation continues. Any criminal charges will be determined after toxicology results come back and the broader probe is complete, the department said.
Planned upgrades at Tondre Parkway
State transportation records show the intersection of U.S. 90 and Tondre Parkway has been flagged for improvements tied to nearby development, including roadway work, drainage, signing and a traffic signal. As detailed by the Texas Transportation Commission, a developer donation has been logged to help fund mitigation work at that junction.
Why this stretch matters
The U.S. 90 corridor west of San Antonio has seen repeated serious wrecks as traffic grows; a Deadly U.S. 90 pileup in April highlighted a multi-vehicle crash near Castroville and the ongoing push for safety upgrades along the route. Transportation officials have been planning multi-phase widening and reconfiguration projects to cut conflict points on U.S. 90 as volumes rise.
The Castroville Police Department asked anyone with information or dash-cam footage to contact investigators, and officials said they will release more details as they become available.
