A Fort Bliss motorcyclist was killed early Wednesday after his bike slammed into the concrete wall of the color-changing underpass on the 1600 block of Airway Boulevard, near El Paso International Airport. Emergency crews pronounced the rider dead at the scene, and investigators shut down lanes in the area while they worked through the wreckage. The collision adds to a rough week on El Paso roads that has kept traffic investigators busy with a run of deadly crashes.
According to the El Paso Times, the rider was identified as 21-year-old Steven Zamora, a Fort Bliss resident who was riding a 2025 Yamaha YZF-R3 northbound in the 1600 block of Airway Boulevard. Investigators with the department's Special Traffic Investigations unit reported that Zamora lost control and struck the underpass wall, and police indicated speed appears to have been a factor. Authorities pronounced him dead at the scene.
The crash was reported about 12:35 a.m. near Airway Boulevard and Boeing Drive. Witnesses at the scene told reporters they saw a body covered by a sheet as police and medics worked nearby. Noticias El Paso reported that the Special Traffic Investigations unit responded to begin the probe.
City traffic toll and recent run of crashes
Police say this crash is the 25th traffic-related death in El Paso this year, compared with 31 at the same point in 2025. It was also the fifth person killed since Saturday, June 27, in a short stretch of deadly collisions. As noted by the El Paso Times, officials have repeatedly pointed to speed and distracted driving as persistent dangers on major arterials.
Investigation under way
The Special Traffic Investigations unit will continue reconstructing the crash to determine contributing factors and whether any violations occurred. Per an El Paso Police Department press release, STI routinely leads fatal-crash probes and works with forensic teams to piece together collision sequences, a process that can take days as investigators review physical evidence and witness accounts.
