A routine spring trip to a Fort Worth pediatric dental office ended in tragedy when a 4-year-old patient died after being sedated, and the treating dentist is now facing a felony charge.
Investigators say the child went into respiratory distress during an April appointment at Cuddle Kids Dental and later died, and allege the 4-year-old was given a combination of sedatives that turned out to be toxic. Authorities have charged 48-year-old Dr. Chrishelle Hemphill with injury to a child - serious bodily injury, as the criminal investigation continues.
According to FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth, Hemphill was arrested yesterday and booked on the felony charge in connection with the April 1 appointment at her pediatric clinic. An arrest affidavit cited by the station alleges the child had unusually high levels of the opioid meperidine in their system and that detectives concluded Hemphill did not properly respond as the child showed signs of respiratory distress.
CBS News Texas reports that investigators say Hemphill gave the child an oral solution containing meperidine (Demerol), two additional sedatives, and nitrous oxide. According to the outlet, the Tarrant County medical examiner ruled the death a result of meperidine toxicity and told investigators the amount of the drug found in the child would have been considered high even for an adult. CBS reports that another dentist in the office cut a lunch break short to help perform CPR after the child became unresponsive.
Inside the Investigation
The arrest affidavit also alleges Hemphill used the wrong emergency reversal medication as the situation unfolded. Instead of giving naloxone, which is used to reverse opioid overdoses, she administered flumazenil, a benzodiazepine reversal agent, according to FOX 4. Detectives say Hemphill was the only staff member who administered medications to the child and allege she failed to adequately address the patient’s respiratory distress before first responders arrived.
Fort Worth police say the case remains open, and investigators are still gathering evidence. Prosecutors in Tarrant County are expected to review the file and decide whether additional or upgraded charges are warranted as more information comes in.
Why Sedating Kids Is So High-Stakes
National pediatric guidelines treat sedation in kids as serious business, emphasizing strict weight-based dosing, continuous monitoring, and having the right emergency drugs immediately available. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry sets out standards for equipment, staffing, and monitoring for office-based sedation in its guidance on caring for children before, during, and after sedation, per the AAPD.
Meperidine (Demerol), in particular, comes with heavy warnings. The official prescribing information notes that dosing mistakes or accidental ingestion can cause life-threatening respiratory depression in both children and adults, according to DailyMed. Public health guidance from the CDC notes that naloxone is the standard emergency treatment for opioid-induced respiratory depression and can often restore breathing within minutes if given in time.
What Comes Next
Hemphill’s arrest follows the Fort Worth police investigation and the medical examiner’s finding on the cause of death, and both local outlets report that legal and regulatory reviews are still unfolding. Parents who want to check on the status of a dentist’s license or any public disciplinary history can use the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners’ online search tool at tsbde.texas.gov. The board can conduct its own review and, depending on the outcome, could pursue disciplinary action separate from any criminal case.
