A fugitive search along Rutland Road in Alexandria turned deadly Monday afternoon when a federal law enforcement officer was killed during a multi-agency operation. Deputies and federal agents flooded the area as the search unfolded, and authorities say a person of interest has been taken into custody. Investigators have not released the officer's name while the inquiry remains active.
FBI New Orleans Leads Probe
The FBI's New Orleans field office says it is leading what it describes as an investigation into an assault on a federal officer, with Louisiana State Police also examining potential violations of state law, according to KALB. The bureau's statement, as published by the station, said the subject is in custody and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office said deputies were on Rutland Road conducting a fugitive search when the incident occurred, per reporting by WDSU. Officials urged residents to steer clear of the area while investigators worked to lock down the scene.
Alexandria Police, the U.S. Marshals Service and Louisiana State Police joined Rapides deputies at the location, and multiple sources confirmed an officer died during the operation, KALB reported. Authorities have not identified the officer publicly as the probe continues.
What the law says
Federal law makes assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers a crime, and penalties increase if a deadly weapon is used or serious bodily injury results. As outlined in 18 U.S.C., those penalties can include lengthy prison terms depending on the severity of the offense.
Local residents and businesses near Rutland Road described an uneasy scene as first responders secured the area, and officials said they will provide additional information when available, per WDSU. With the investigation active and ongoing, law enforcement has declined to offer further comment for now.
