An all-clear was issued yesterday after a construction accident triggered a natural gas leak that shut down a stretch of State Route 422 in Solon and Orange Village, forcing nearby businesses to evacuate or shelter in place while hazmat crews swept buildings for lingering gas. The emergency response covered the area between Naiman Parkway and Brainard Road, where first responders staged as specialists checked interiors. Officials said no injuries were reported and that the immediate danger had been eliminated.
Where crews responded and what was closed
Out of what officials called an abundance of caution, State Route 422 was temporarily closed in both directions between Naiman Parkway and Brainard Road as firefighters and police worked the scene, and businesses along that corridor were either evacuated or ordered to shelter in place, according to News 5 Cleveland. HAZMAT teams tested affected buildings on Naiman Parkway, then cleared them for people to return once gas readings came back in the safe range. Officials told crews that the natural gas had dissipated and the hazard was considered eliminated.
How residents should respond
If you smell natural gas, officials say the first move is simple: leave immediately. Do not smoke, do not flip light switches, and do not use phones or any device that could create a spark inside the building. The American Gas Association advises calling 911 or your gas utility from a safe distance outside and then following instructions from emergency crews. Residents are urged to wait until utility workers and hazmat teams officially clear a building before going back inside.
Road and utility status
Officials said utility crews are working to restore natural gas and electrical service where needed, and motorists should expect lingering traffic issues on SR-422 while repairs and inspections continue, according to News 5 Cleveland. Local police departments are asking drivers to use alternate routes and avoid the area until the restoration work is finished. Anyone with questions about outages or safety is being directed to contact local emergency services or their gas utility.
