A DoorDash driver in north Houston's Greenspoint neighborhood was struck by a car driven by a suspect fleeing police on Wednesday evening and still walked the food up to the customer’s front door, as caught on video. Neighbor footage shows the woman pause to steady herself after the impact, clutching the delivery bag, before heading to the porch and then seeking help. The surreal scene left neighbors shaken and added fresh fuel to ongoing worries about how risky late-night delivery work has become in Houston.
Video shows driver hit, then finishing the delivery
The clip, shared with Eyewitness News, shows the driver getting hit as a suspect in a vehicle raced away from Houston Police officers, then taking a few moments to collect herself before completing the delivery, according to ABC13 Houston. Neighbors who spoke with the station provided footage of both the collision and the suspect’s eventual takedown in a nearby backyard. Court documents reviewed by the station identify the suspect as Torrence Whitaker, who was wanted in connection with a burglary in the 13000 block of Northborough Drive and is now charged with aggravated assault tied to the crash.
How delivery insurance and claims usually work
DoorDash provides third-party liability and occupational accident coverage for drivers while they are on active deliveries, but that coverage does not extend to damage to a driver’s own vehicle and may not apply when a Dasher is simply logged in and waiting for an order, according to DoorDash Dasher Central. Because of those gaps, injured drivers typically go after the at-fault driver’s auto insurance first and may then turn to DoorDash’s policies or occupational benefits if there are remaining losses, legal guides explain. The Greenspoint Dasher told reporters she is in pain but has no broken bones and plans to file a claim against the suspect’s auto insurer.
Delivery-driver safety in north Houston
The collision has become another example residents point to when talking about safety fears for people who deliver food in the area late at night. In May 2023 a DoorDash driver was shot in the leg after completing a delivery in north Houston, the Houston Chronicle reported.
Legal implications
Court documents and neighbor video show Whitaker was arrested in a backyard and now faces aggravated assault charges related to the collision, per ABC13 Houston. Attorneys say injured couriers in cases like this should hang on to any video, photos, and medical records, make sure a police report is filed, and notify their insurers quickly to preserve potential civil claims while the criminal case works its way through court.
