A routine Monday morning in downtown Wilson turned tense after an officer-involved shooting sent people sprinting for cover, shut down City Hall and brought a swarm of investigators into the streets around the county courthouse. Police labeled the situation a “critical incident” and urged residents to steer clear of the area while they sorted out what happened.

What Officials Are Saying
According to the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, the shooting occurred “at and near” the Wilson County Courthouse. SBI detectives were called in to assist Wilson authorities, working alongside the N.C. State Highway Patrol. The agency’s initial post stopped there, offering no additional details about how the shooting unfolded.
Witness Accounts and a Scramble for Safety
People nearby told WRAL they heard gunfire echo through the area and saw others running. One witness said she counted eight shots. Another said she dropped down in her car to avoid the line of fire.
WRAL also reported that officers were combing the downtown area for a person described as wearing black and carrying a green backpack. The Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, according to the station, planned to provide an update later in the afternoon.
Downtown Locked Down, City Hall Closed
The shooting quickly rippled into a broader shutdown of the city’s core. City officials announced on Facebook that City Hall would close for the rest of the day and that several downtown streets would remain blocked while investigators worked the scene, the News & Observer reported.
Officials said they did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the public but still urged people to avoid the courthouse area until investigators cleared it, according to the News & Observer.
What Investigators Still Have Not Said
Key details remained murky hours after the gunfire. As noted by WRAL, the SBI had not said which agency the involved officer works for. It also was not clear whether that officer fired any shots or was the person who had been shot.
Detectives from the SBI and other state and local agencies were expected to gather evidence and interview witnesses before releasing a fuller account of the shooting.
The Wilson Police Department did not immediately respond to requests for more information, the News & Observer reported. In the meantime, officials urged residents to keep an eye on local media and official city channels for word on when roads will reopen and when the next briefing will be held.
